Baby Button Shawl Pattern

Size
This pattern was created for size 12-18 months. Adjust as needed for length and width of the shawl.
Materials
Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca – 1 skein: 415yds – I used the color Jade you can find HERE
Tapestry needle. I used this one HERE
Size K(6.5mm) crochet hook
2 – 2 inch buttons
2 safety pins
Glue(to glue safety pin to the button)
Gauge
12.5 sts x 12 rows worked in main pattern = 4” 7 sts = 2” and 8.5 rows = 4” worked in hdc ribbing
Abbreviations and Glossary (US Terms)
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdcblo - half double crochet through the back loop only
sc – single crochet
sk - skip
sl st – slip stitch
sp - space
st(s) – stitch(es)
We will begin with the front ribbing and work our way to the back of the shawl. We will then make the ribbing for the collar and ribbing for the bottom back of the shawl.
Foundation Row: Ch 7
Row 1: hdcblo in 3rd Ch from hook and each ch until end of row (5)
Row 2-30: Ch 2, hdcblo into each hdc until end of row; turn.
Do not fasten off.
Body of Front and Back of Shawl
Using the same working yarn from the ribbing, work 40 sts of the following Row 1 evenly across the long edge of ribbing. You will have approximately 4 sts for every 3 ribbing rows.
Row 1: Ch 1, *1 sc inribbing, 1 dc in ribbing; rep from * to end of ribbing, working 1 sc in final ribbing sp; turn. (40)
Row 2-23: Ch 1, 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc; rep from * ending 1 sc in final st; turn. (40)
Row 24: Ch 1, continue sc, dc, sc pattern for 9 stitches, turn
Row 25-32: Ch 1, *sc, dc, sc to end of row, turn. Repeat from *.
Row 33: Ch 1, sc, dc, sc until end of row. Then sl st down and around collar until there are 9 st left on the row. Ch 1, sc, dc, sc until end of row.
Row 34-40: Ch 1, *sc, dc, sc for 9 st, turn. Repeat from *.
Row 41: Ch 1, sc, dc, sc for 9 st. Ch 22 then sl st to meet other side of neckline to complete the neckline. Then sl st to the end of the row.
Row 42-65: Ch 1, *sc, dc, sc across (40). Repeat from *.
Fasten off.
Ribbing for back bottom of shawl and Neckline
Foundation Row: Ch 7
Row 1: hdcblo in 3rd Ch from hook and each ch until end of row (5)
Row 2: Ch 2, hdcblo into each hdc until end of row; turn. Continue rows until the ribbing is the length of the back bottom of shawl.
Complete the instructions above for the neckline ribbing
Attaching the Ribbing
Using a tapestry needle, sew the ribbing to the back bottom. Do the same for the neckline ribbing.
Buttons
For the buttons, attach the safety pins with glue.
